Suggestions for Students being tutored
Be prepared for every tutoring session. Look over the material,
try some of the problems and prepare questions for your tutor.
The more preparation you do for the tutoring sessions, the more
that you will get out of them.
Inform the tutor of your understanding of the material and the
lack thereof whenever appropriate. Do not pretend to understand
something that you are having problems with as it will only
cause greater difficulties for you later.
Try to do as much of the work during the tutoring sessions as
you can. During examinations, your tutor will not be there to
help you. Your notes or texts may not be available either. It
is essential that you learn the material thoroughly if you are
to get a good grade in the course. Many students develop a reliance
on things that they do not have available during the examinations.
This can be very detrimental to the learning process and ultimately
to their grades.
Work with the tutor as much as possible. If you have any problems
during the tutoring sessions, tell the tutor first. Then, if
it can’t be resolved, bring them to the attention of the
manager of Home Tutoring Services.
Keep records of how the tutoring sessions go. In particular,
document which subjects you worked on in the tutoring session
and what was learned. This could be a journal that you or your
tutor could look back upon for guidance to any problem that
might arise.
